Pixar Intro Parody

I like this video for two reasons, one it's a funny parody of the famous Pixar intro, and two it's a clever use of type. I like the fact different letters represent different jobs and people, for example P for police or the crying mother I.

Typographic Book Cover

On Tuesday 10th of November I was given the first of three briefs in Typographic Studies. The brief was to take a book we had read (or at least had an interest in) and to re-design the cover using only typography. I haven't really read much for a while and the only books I could remember were Dan Brown's Deception Point and Ben Mezrich's Bringing Down The House. I chose Bringing Down The House as it was one of the first books I read for enjoyment. Also I am interested in card-counting, gambling and casinos. After experimenting including burning letters into cards and scribbling code words into a 'cheat sheet'. I landed on recreating a blackjack table using typography, using a similar font to the font used to write rules on blackjack tables and a similar colour-scheme. I also used the shape of two playing cards placed one on top of the other and added a 'optical illusion' style type onto them.

Stumbling through the internet recently I found the colour of art, and it's grayish brown!! Well, the colour of art, according to designer Joshua Nimoy and the average colour from 26,000 images from the MoMA art collection.

PolarClock : pixelbreaker

I have a slight obsession with time, well not technically time itself but what you use to tell the time. I have a large collection of watches and several different clocks ticking away in my room, and I like them all because they are so different but do the same thing. For example my Spiderman alarm clock deafens me in the morning with the sounds of "Spiderman, Spiderman, does whatever a spider can!!", but it couldn't be more different from the 'Time Pyramid' that sits on my desk and is constantly changing shape as it's alternating sections tell me the time in a whole different way.

Logotype

On Friday 23rd of October I was given was given my second of two briefs in Introductory Studies. This time we were given the task of designing a logotype for a profession and country that we pulled randomly out of a box. Our logo was to represent the activities of the profession and the identity of the country we were given. After picking the profession and country out of the boxes I had landed with Zimbabwean Inventor. My first thoughts were an interesting combination but also a hard one. I had several ideas about how I was going to represent the two, including going off on a slight tangent with a African word that didn't make much sense, until i decided on use the colours of the Zimbabwean flag, the Zimbabwean bird from the flag and light bulbs to represent the ideas of inventors. After experimenting with using these elements in different ways, such as the light bulb above the birds head or the light bulb inside the bird, I decided my favorite design was shaping the filament in the bulb into the Zimbabwean bird.

Andy Awesome

I stumbled across some work by artist Andy Awesome I really liked. Titled "Series Nº1", Andy Awesome has taken notable figures from pop culture and given them his own twist. He has taken characters from everywhere, TV, film, video games, comic books and music. They remind me of a modern version of the Andy Warhol prints of Marilyn Monroe.
